andreasmarkt and bowling

October 31, 2008

On Sunday evening Antje took Jason and I to the Andreasmarkt over on Elsässer Platz. Antje said this was a minor festival compared to all the others, but this was our first experience. We took our little G9 camera with us and had some fun shooting in the low light. We didn’t go on any rides, but we did enjoy some Zuckerwatte and Lakritze (cotton candy and licorice, yum!)
After the festival we met Tyler and some of Tyler and Antje’s friends at the bowling alley for a couple hours of bowling fun! Viktor was a pro. He bowls without using the holes, and curves his ball so much that it seems like it’s going in the gutter every time, but then comes back for a perfect strike. Now I can do that in wii bowling, but it was amazing to see it for real! Oh, and I didn’t notice this until I was editing the pictures, but that Brunswick bowling ball below made it all the way from the states.
Also, Jason and I officially have our own apartment now!  We just signed the contract yesterday and won’t be moving in for a few days still, but I will post some pictures soon.

herbstfärbung

October 13, 2008

So I can see here that it’s been nearly half a month since my last post!  Time seems to be flying by right now and apparently I am having a hard time keeping up with it.  Fall is nearly upon us (it sure has been cold enough here!) and with it have appeared some beautiful Herbstfärbung (fall colors).  These photographs were taken while Jason and I took a walk downtown.  It is partly the same route we walk to and from work each day.  This first shot is of one of the few flowers still hanging on as the weather turns cooler.  We felt it was time for a new perspective, so we used our 100-300mm telephoto lens on all of these instead of our usual 16-35mm wide angle.  One thing I love about a large focal length is the beautiful bokeh–that out-of-focus background.  I think it turned out especially nice on this first shot and in the fourth/fifth photo below of the leaves against the sky.
The last two photos Jason took of me in front of a church that we walk by each day.  We haven’t had the chance to look inside yet, but it is very pretty.  It is on this very rough cobblestone street lined with beautiful trees.
Thank you for continuing to take a look at our photographs!  We really enjoy sharing them with you all, and I will work on being a better blogger : ).  I just accepted a new job as a teller with one of the banks here on base, so I will be back to the good ol’ banker hours that I’ve been spoiled with in the past!  We are searching for a small studio apartment in town and hope to find a place in no time.  Finding an apartment here requires a lot of calling, but it has given me a chance to practice my German!
